Korean red ginseng is produced through a steaming and drying process from raw Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) to enhance safety, preservation and efficacy. [1] In the course of the steaming process, ginseng starch is gelatinised, resulting in an increase in ginseng saponin ('ginsenosides') content. [2] Ginsenosides are the major active ingredients found in ginseng which are responsible for its biological and pharmacological activities. [3] Other than ginsenosides, non-saponin active ingredients such as acidic polysaccharide, polyacetylene, phenolic compound, minerals and AFG amino sugar also contribute to the rich benefits of Korean red ginseng.

Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is one of the traditional medicinal plants cultivated in Korea, and it has been widely used in health functional foods like Korean red ginseng, fermented red ginseng and black ginseng.
Traditionally, Korean red ginseng is produced through a steaming and drying process from raw Korean ginseng to enhance safety, preservation and efficacy. [1] In the course of the steaming process, ginseng starch is gelatinised, resulting in an increase in ginsenosides content. [2]
Other treatment methods have evolved to create fermented red ginseng and black ginseng, which claim to have higher ginsenoside content that is typically emphasized by an increase in certain ginsenosides.
What is fermented red ginseng and black ginseng?
• Fermented red ginseng refers to red ginseng that has been fermented via microorganisms
• Black ginseng is produced by steaming and drying raw ginseng up to 9 times
When red ginseng is fermented via microorganisms, the properties of red ginseng are changed upon fermentation [3], therefore they are unable to claim to have the same benefits as Korean red ginseng. While fermentation improves the bio-absorption of certain bioactive compounds as compared to regular red ginseng, no clinical study shows that fermented red ginseng is absorbed better than red ginseng when comparing all components.
In the case of black ginseng manufacturing, multiple steaming cycles increases certain ginsenoside contents significantly, but this process carbonises the ginseng. [4] When there is no proper moisture during the heat treatment, benzo[a]pyrene (BAP), a carcinogen, is produced. [5,6] The selection of proper raw materials is also important to prevent unsafe products. [4]
Jung Kwan Jang aims to provide customers with reliable efficacy through optimisation of active ingredients (saponin and non-saponin) in a safe and balanced manner that brings out the full effects of Korean red ginseng.
It is important to note that the six certified benefits of Korean red ginseng are contributed by various bioactive ingredients of Korean red ginseng, including ginsenosides (ginseng saponins), polysaccharides, polyacetylene, phenolic compounds, minerals and AFG amino sugar.
In addition, major ginsenosides Rg1, Rb1 and Rg3 are merely marker components used by the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to ascertain if a product is considered red ginseng or not, but it is not a criterion that validates the quality and efficacy of any red ginseng product. Therefore, comparing the efficacies of a ginseng product should not be limited to certain markers of ginsenoside content only.
Rather than artificially raising certain ginsenoside components, it is important to have a harmonious and balanced intake of various active ingredients (saponins and non-saponins) of Korean red ginseng so as to optimise its health benefits.
All Jung Kwan Jang products also go through 293 tests that are repeated 7 times over 8 years period, from soil preparation to cultivation and manufacturing, to ensure the highest quality and safety.
Note: Among the 6 certified benefits of Korean red ginseng, memory improvement, blood flow improvement and antioxidation improvement were officially certified using Jung Kwan Jang Korean red ginseng products.

The quality of ginseng varies with the age at harvest. While the ginseng's shape becomes complete in the fourth year after planting, it takes six years for the root to mature and unlock its maximum efficacy and optimal amount of ginsenosides (active ingredients known for their anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating activity). After six years of growth, the effectiveness of its active ingredients will no longer improve and may even deteriorate. Mature 6-year-old ginseng roots also contain 1.4 to 2 times higher amounts of active components than those grown for four years. [1]

As an adaptogen, Korean red ginseng helps protect the body from physiological stress and restores balance to the body. It is non-toxic and suitable for long-term use. In case of an allergic reaction, stop consumption immediately and the allergy should naturally be alleviated.
Korean red ginseng is generally good for everyone, young and old, regardless of their body constitution. It is suitable for children aged 3 and above to consume and has also been approved by the US FDA to be safe for children's consumption.
The efficacies of Korean red ginseng is dependent on each individual’s physical body condition instead of their age. Its efficacies may be experienced relatively more in weak subjects or elderly with reduced physical function, as compared to healthy, young adults. However, healthy individuals are still encouraged to consume Korean red ginseng regularly as a daily supplement to boost the immune system, improve overall vitality and slow down the effects of aging.
Note: If you are currently pregnant, nursing or on medication, please consult a doctor first before taking Korean red ginseng. As Korean red ginseng has an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation, caution should be taken for individuals who are on anti-platelet medication or warfarin.
Heatiness, in TCM terms, arises from an excessive buildup of heat in the body. Several dietary and lifestyle factors contribute to this, including the overconsumption of spicy, deep-fried, warming or alcoholic foods, late nights as well as inadequate water intake.
It is important to understand that our body's balance is not disturbed by the intake of a single herb alone. Instead, it's the sum of all parts, reflected in the overall balance of our diet and lifestyle.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, every herb is considered to have a particular property of energy: cold, cool, neutral, warm or hot. In the case of Korean red ginseng, it is classified as a warm herb in TCM pharmacopeia. While it does have a "warmer" nature than other types of ginseng, it promotes blood circulation and energy metabolism by inhibiting the formation of blood clots and reducing blood lipids. The result of supplying energy to the body through circulation may leave a warm feeling on the skin, but Korean red ginseng does not actually raise the body’s core temperature. [1] Therefore, it is not heaty.
From a TCM perspective, 'heatiness' is a result of excessive Yang energy in the body. This can also be contributed by unhealthy dietary and lifestyle factors such as frequently staying up late, overworking without adequate rest and consuming excessive 'heaty' foods such as deep-fried or spicy foods and alcohols. When consuming Korean red ginseng, it is advisable to take at least 8 glasses of water daily and aim for a well-balanced diet.

Ginseng tonics are generally suitable from the 2nd trimester onwards. For ginseng tonics, switch to American ginseng in the 3rd trimester as they have cooling properties that align with the body's needs during this stage. However, it's advisable to avoid ginseng tonics 1 month before your estimated delivery date. Please consult a certified physician about any medical conditions or concerns you may have.
Ginseng tonics are generally suitable for nursing mothers. If you are concerned about how the herbs you take may impact your breastfeeding, you may consume them right after nursing or expressing your breastmilk to minimise the herbal content in your blood before the next feeding or pumping session.
The recommended dosage on Jung Kwan Jang's packaging is intended for Korean consumers who have been long-term users of Korean red ginseng since young. As our climate and dietary habits of those living in Singapore differ from Koreans, new users of Korean red ginseng are recommended to start off with a reduced dosage (e.g. half or one-third of the regular dosage) and extend the intervals between each dose (e.g. once every 2-3 days) during the first month. Do monitor your body's response before slowly increasing to the recommended daily dosage. It is also advisable to take at least 8 glasses of water daily and aim for a well-balanced diet.
Although side-effects are rare and uncommon, reduce dosage or stop usage if you are unsure.
Our Jung Kwan Jang stocks are specifically made for Singapore market. Most Jung Kwan Jang products have a general shelf life of 2 years from the date of manufacturing before they are shipped out to Singapore, with some exception for these selected products:
• 1.5 years shelf life from date of manufacturing for Student Tonic I-Pass series and Hwa Ae Rak Innergetic Jelly
• 3 years shelf life from date of manufacturing for Korean Red Ginseng Extract 240g/100g, Extract Limited, Extract Master Class and Extract Heaven
However, by the time the new batch of imported stocks reaches us, the expiry period may be shortened by approximately 3 to 6 months after shipping. Therefore, it will be recommended to buy what's required instead of bulk bundles if you do not have a habit of consuming the products daily.
For products that are reduced to clear, whereby such goods typically have short expiry periods of 6 months and below, we will indicate the expiry dates clearly for such sale items. Goods that are reduced to clear are strictly non-refundable.
The recommended course for Jung Kwan Jang's Korean red ginseng products is a minimum of 30 days of continuous usage. However, please note that effects may vary from person to person, depending on each individual’s body constitution. It may also be experienced relatively more in weak subjects or elderly with reduced physical function, as compared to healthy, young adults.
Korean red ginseng can generally be taken with all foods. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners often advise against taking herbs with tea products (such as Chinese tea, green tea, milk tea, red tea, black tea) or white radish, as these foods may counteract the herb's efficacies. If you are consuming tea or white radish, you should consume it two hours before or after taking Korean red ginseng.
In addition, please avoid subjecting Korean red ginseng to high temperatures (specifically above 80°C) as this would destroy the active components inside the ginseng. After cooking, let the hot food cool down for 10-15 mins before mixing in Korean red ginseng extract or powder. If you are decocting raw Korean red ginseng roots, please use a lower fire to keep water temperature at about 85-95°C — do not keep the water boiling.
There is no difference in efficacy whether you consume Korean red ginseng before or after a meal. However, if you have a sensitive digestive system, consuming it after a meal is recommended. In general, Korean red ginseng is better absorbed when consumed before breakfast, on an empty stomach, or 2-3 hours before bedtime. From Traditional Chinese Medicine's perspective, since Korean red ginseng is considered a Yang herb, it would be most ideal to consume it in the morning as our body's Yang energy is most dominant in the day.
Note: Most traditional supplements can be consumed two hours apart from western medication and supplements. However, please seek advice from a doctor or certified physician if you are currently on medication or herbal supplements, so as to avoid any herb-drug or herb-herb interaction.
Generally, most traditional supplements can be consumed two hours apart from western medication and supplements. This is subject to personal preference. While Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners usually recommend taking tonics after menstruation is over, some studies have suggested that ingesting Korean red ginseng during the menstrual period can aid in reducing menstrual pain and maintaining regular monthly cycles.
A study conducted on healthy young women who experienced menstrual pain has shown that Korean red ginseng improves oligomenorrhea (infrequent menstrual periods) and dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain). [1] Another study has also shown that Ginsenoside R2, one of the active components present in Korean red ginseng, suppresses uterine fibroids caused by estrogen/progesterone, therefore suggesting that Korean red ginseng is also effective in alleviating secondary dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain caused by diseases such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids). [2] However, it is recommended for women with secondary dysmenorrhea to seek treatment and consult a medical specialist before taking Korean red ginseng.

• Korean Red Ginseng Roots
•
• Korean Red Ginseng Extract
Extract Everytime is a 100% Korean red ginseng product while Extract Everytime Balance are formulated with a lower concentration of Korean red ginseng extract and other subsidiary ingredients to cater to new-to-ginseng users.
• Korean Red Ginseng Extract Everytime contains 3g of Korean red ginseng extract, with 7g of water in every stick.
• Korean Red Ginseng Extract Everytime Balance has a lower concentration of 2.1g of Korean red ginseng extract, combined with propolis, liquorice, agave syrup and water, for a less bitter and more balanced taste.
The difference lies in the way they are processed:
•
• Korean Red Ginseng Extract products are made by processing and cooking the Korean red ginseng roots at lower heat to produce the pure essence of Korean red ginseng with the optimal amount of active healthy components. It takes approximately more than 40% more roots to make 1g of extract than powder.
Between the two, the extract range of products are more potent, more easily absorbed and have higher efficacy than the powder range.
