FAQs

Cheong Kwan Jang FAQs

Q: Who can consume Korean red ginseng?
A: Korean red ginseng is generally good for everyone, young and old, regardless of their constitution.

Q: Is Korean red ginseng safe for consumption during pregnancy or nursing?
A: We generally do not recommend the use of Korean red ginseng products during pregnancy or nursing, and strongly advise against the use of any herbs during the first trimester as the risk of miscarriage is higher — but do seek your doctor’s advice if you wish to consume them from the second trimester onwards. Some non-conservative moms consume Korean red ginseng during their last trimester with no adverse effects ever observed in these cases. No studies have also reported any side effects after consuming Korean red ginseng in nursing women.

Q: What are the benefits of consuming Korean red ginseng?
A: Korean red ginseng is an approved functional health product that is certified by the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Cheong Kwan Jang’s Korean red ginseng has also been approved by the US FDA as safe for children’s consumption. Korean red ginseng is known to be effective in boosting immunity, assisting recovery from fatigue, inhibiting platelet agglutination and thereby facilitating blood circulation, improving memory, relieving menopausal symptoms, as well as having a powerful antioxidant effect.¹

Q: Is Korean red ginseng heaty? Can people with a heaty constitution take Korean red ginseng?
A: According to TCM, Korean red ginseng is considered to have a warm nature hence it is not heaty. Consuming it helps promote blood circulation and energy metabolism by inhibiting the formation of blood clots and reducing blood lipids. And it supplies energy to the body through circulation. Therefore, consumption of Korean red ginseng promotes energy metabolism and improves blood circulation, so you may feel warm after consuming it but red ginseng does not actually cause “heatiness” or raise your body temperature.

In a clinical study with Koreans, Chinese and Vietnamese subjects, there was no change in heat and body temperature when comparing before and after consumption of Korean red ginseng. Also, there were no side effects. Another study suggested Korean red ginseng is recommended to be consumed in any season, as it maintains homeostasis by improving the body's ability to adapt to external environmental stresses such as heat or cold.

Q: How long should I consume Korean red ginseng products before I can experience the effects?
A: The recommended course is a minimum 30 days of continuous usage. Please note that effects may differ from person to person, depending on each individual’s body constitution.

Q: Are there any adverse effects to using Korean red ginseng?
A: Ginseng is non-toxic and can be consumed in the long term. In case of an allergic reaction, stop consumption immediately and the allergy should naturally be alleviated.

Q: Is Korean red ginseng more beneficial to a certain age group? Can children or elderly take Korean red ginseng?
A: Korean red ginseng consumption can be consumed by all age groups, not just specific age groups. In addition, Cheong Kwan Jang’s Korean red ginseng has been approved by the US FDA as safe for children’s consumption.

Korean children have been consuming Korean red ginseng for a long time, and Cheong Kwan Jang's children's products such as Kid Tonic (Step 1 to 3) are designed to support children’s growth from age 3 to 10. Alternatively, children from the ages of 3 to 15 can consume half the recommended dosage for other products designed for adults, except the specialty range of functional products. The Good Base fruit drinks are also suitable for kids aged 3-15 to consume the regular dosage as they are fruit-based and contain a very low amount of Korean red ginseng.

Generally, Korean red ginseng’s potency depends more on the physical conditions of individuals than on their age. Its effectiveness is relatively more in weak subjects or elderly with reduced physical function, as compared to healthy, young adults. However, healthy individuals are also encouraged to take Korean red ginseng regularly to help strengthen immunity, delay aging and improve stamina.

Q: What should new users take note when consuming Korean red ginseng?
A: Korean red ginseng is safe to be consumed as a daily supplement. Users are recommended to consume 3g of Korean red ginseng daily to reap the maximum health benefits of the ginseng.

Children aged 3 to 15 years old are recommended to consume half the regular dosage recommended for adults — as indicated under selected products’ dosage information in this website. As Good Base products are fruit-based and contain very low amounts of Korean red ginseng, they are suitable for children to consume the regular dose.

The recommended dosage on the packaging is meant for Korean consumers, who have been exposed to the use of Korean red ginseng since young. Given that the climate and dietary habits of Singaporeans differ from Koreans, new users who are starting to take Korean red ginseng are not recommended to consume the full dosage at the beginning. When beginning a ginseng regime, start off with a half serving and slowly increase to full dosage as your body adapts to the effects of ginseng. Although side-effects are rare and uncommon, reduce dosage or stop usage if you are unsure.

Q: When is the best time to consume Korean red ginseng products?
A: There is no difference in efficacy even if you eat Korean red ginseng before or after a meal, but if you have a sensitive digestive system, it is recommended to take it after meal. In general, it is better absorbed if consumed before breakfast, on an empty stomach, or 2-3 hours before bedtime. Do note, as with all traditional supplements, Korean red ginseng can be consumed two hours apart from western medication. However, please seek doctor's advice if you are currently on medication.

Q: What should I take note when consuming Korean red ginseng? Any food to avoid consuming it with?
A: Korean red ginseng can generally be taken with all foods. However in TCM, it is not recommended to consume Korean red ginseng together with tea (e.g. Chinese tea, green tea, milk tea, red tea, black tea etc) or white radish, as these foods may counteract the efficacy of the ginseng. If you are consuming tea or white radish, please take Korean red ginseng two hours apart from them.

You can add Extract or Powder into frozen fruits, yoghurt, milk and granola to make a breakfast smoothie. This mix of ingredients can hide away the bitter taste of the ginseng extract, making it perfect for kids and adults to enjoy.

In addition, please do not subject Korean red ginseng to high temperature (specifically above 80°C) as this would destroy the active components inside the ginseng. After cooking, let the hot food cool down for 10-15 mins before mixing in Korean red ginseng powder or extract. For home decoction of Korean red ginseng raw roots, please use a lower fire to keep water temperature at about 85-95°C — do not keep the water boiling.

Q: Can Korean red ginseng be taken together with other medications or supplements?

A: As with all traditional supplements, Korean red ginseng can be consumed two hours apart from western medication or supplements.

However, please seek doctor's advice if you are currently on medication. Since Korean red ginseng has an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation, caution should be taken when taking it with antiplatelet medication or warfarin.

If you consume herbal supplements together with Korean red ginseng, it may overlap with other types of ginseng or herbs, therefore please consult a licensed TCM practitioner first.

Q: Is Korean red ginseng suitable for people with high blood pressure?
A: Many people have a misconception that blood pressure increase is a side effect of taking KRG, but existing research papers have shown that Korean red ginseng is useful as a safe treatment aid in regulating blood pressure when taken along with high blood pressure treatment medications.

Extra care should be taken for new users. Start with a reduced (1/3) dosage during the first 2-3 weeks and monitor the body’s response before slowly increasing to the daily recommended dosage. However, if your blood pressure is not well-controlled by medication or your high blood pressure is severe, please consult your doctor before taking KRG.

Q: Does Korean red ginseng help in reducing blood cholesterol?
A: Studies have shown that Korean red ginseng aids in improving lipid metabolism, thereby reducing blood cholesterol. In a clinical study conducted with menopausal women, it was reported that total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol level decreased after 12 weeks of consuming Korean red ginseng.

Extra care should be taken for new users. Start with a reduced (1/3) dosage during the first 2-3 weeks and monitor the body’s response before slowly increasing to the daily recommended dosage. However, patients with severe conditions should consult their doctors before consuming.

Q: Can diabetic patients consume Korean red ginseng?
A: Many diabetic patients consume Korean red ginseng products to relieve fatigue and maintain overall wellness. Studies have shown that Korean red ginseng helps improve blood sugar control in diabetic patients and reduce complications such as fatigue and numbness in the hands and feet caused by diabetes.

Customers should check the nutritional table on the product labels for sugar content before consuming. Extra care should be taken for new users. Start with a reduced (1/3) dosage during the first 2-3 weeks and monitor the body’s response before slowly increasing to the daily recommended dosage. However, if the patient’s diabetes is very severe and cannot be controlled with diabetes medications or needs to restrict his/her food intake, please consult a doctor before consuming.

Q: Is Korean red ginseng good for those experiencing cold hands and feet?

A: Poor blood circulation is one of the common causes of cold hands and feet. For such cases, yes, Korean red ginseng helps in the circulation of blood and may alleviate cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet. Besides that, the regular consumption of ginseng also helps to boost your immunity and lift energy levels.

Q: Can ladies take Korean red ginseng during their period?
A: This is subject to personal preference. Korean red ginseng does not have negative effects for women during their period. In fact, it may help women maintain regular monthly cycles. However, in TCM, women are advised not to tonify their bodies during their period.

Q: Can cancer patients take Korean red ginseng?
A: After cancer treatment, the patient's physical strength and immunity will decrease, making chemotherapy difficult and complications may then occur. Korean red ginseng helps to improve this. In one study, patients who underwent chemotherapy after gastric and colon cancer surgery experienced an improvement in their immunity after taking Korean red ginseng. In addition, as a result of a clinical study of colorectal cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy, cancer-related fatigue was significantly improved after consumption of Korean red ginseng. Depending on the individual's health condition, it may be necessary to take it, however it is recommended to take it after consulting with a doctor.

Q: Can patients who have undergone surgery take Korean red ginseng?
A: Please consult your doctor, especially if you are currently on warfarin or diabetes medications. Since Korean red ginseng has an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation, caution should be taken when taking it with antiplatelet or warfarin.

Q: What Korean red ginseng products would you recommend for first-time users?
A: Generally, it boils down to a few factors: how receptive you are towards bitter taste, your needs and lifestyle. If you are generally comfortable with the bitter taste of ginseng and looking for an immunity and energy booster, you may consider the Extract range of products. They contain the pure essence of Korean red ginseng with an optimal amount of active healthy components.

Depending on your lifestyle and usage preference, you may consider some of our bestsellers:

Q: What is the difference between the Korean red ginseng extract and powder range?
A: The difference lies in the way they are processed:

  • KRG Powders are made by grinding raw Korean red ginseng roots into a powder form, before using the powder to make the end products.
  • KRG Extracts are made by processing and cooking the Korean red ginseng roots at lower heat to produce the pure essence of Korean red ginseng with the optimal amount of active healthy components. It takes more than 40% more roots to make 1g of extract.

Between the two, the extract range of products are more potent and have higher efficacy than the powder range.

Q: What is the difference between Extract Everytime & Extract Everytime Balance?
A: Extract Everytime contains 3g of Korean red ginseng extract, with 7g of water in every stick. It is considered a 100% Extract product. Extract Everytime Balance has a lower concentration of 2.1g of KRG extract, combined with propolis, licorice, agave syrup and water, for a less bitter and more balanced taste.

Q: Which products are good for slimming?
A: We do not have any weight loss products.

Q: Why does Cheong Kwan Jang only use 6-years-grown ginseng?
A: The ginseng's shape becomes complete in the fourth year after planting. However, it takes six years for the root to mature and unlock its maximum efficacy and optimal amount of ginsenosides (plant compounds known for their anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating activity). After six years of growth, the effectiveness of its ingredients will no longer improve and may even deteriorate. Mature 6-year-old ginseng roots also contain 1.4 to 2 times higher amount of active components than those grown for four years.²

Q: Why should I choose Cheong Kwan Jang over other Korean red ginseng brands?
A: Cheong Kwan Jang is the World’s No. 1 Ginseng brand³ with over 120 years of craftsmanship. The brand only uses 6-years-grown ginseng for maximum efficacy. It requires eight years in total, including the preparation period and the management of soil and growth, to harvest each ginseng. Compared with other ginseng brands sold in Southeast Asia and other regions, Cheong Kwan Jang is highly rated and holds the highest reputation for its rigorous process and strict standards in producing world-class KRG products — including subjecting them to 4 times stricter standards than required by the South Korean government, dedicating 20% of its annual revenue to continuous R&D and conducting 293 safety tests on its products.
